Documentary Analysis

In this documentary i will be analysing certain screen shots of it, using the four technical aspects. Wich include, editing, cinematography, mis-en-scene and sound.
The documentary which i have chosen comes from newsnight. It is about a former agent who had been tortured in uzbekistan by the people of the president.

The first screen shot i show, non diegetic sound is being played whilst showing the fighting. This sound goes in contrast with what is actually happening in this very scene, as the music played is very classical and slow... almost adding on more emotion, as what is happening is dreadfull and sad. Also the lighting in this scene is very low. This is used to add more tension in the scene, so the viewers are kept more interested into what is happening in this very scene. A medium shot has been used, so we can have a clear shot of the action taking place, aswell as it focusing on the main domains of the picture, which is the police officer fighting a woman.

In this screenshot, we can see that at the bottom right hand corner, the "bbc world news"- has been placed there so everyone can establish who is this documentary by. This enables them to publicize their channel. Also the footage taken is in black and white. This informs the audience that the video is old. This makes the documentary seem much more convincing and interesting, because the  footage is real and has been taken a while back, so we know that the topic that is being presented, has been going on for years. This shot is a medium wide shot, this is used to set the location and the scene. In this case there is a big riot, with the people and the police. This represents that there is havoc in their country that cant be resolved as it is all out of place.

The next screen shot i have chosen is a wide shot. The wide shot is used to set the scene, in this case it is a very clean and calm place, which goes against the story which he is tellin, which is violent and painfull. In this shot the two men are put in almost spot lights, where everything around them has been turned into black and white. This is done to highlight the importance of the two men who are now walking off to talk about the confession. Without mis-en-scene there would not be much detail in the documentary. The costume design is very eligant and sofisticated. This makes the documentary seem much serious and important as their clothes represent this.

This screenshot shows alot of emotion of the main guy in the documentary. The director has done this by having a closeup shot of the mans face. This increases the tension and really focuses on his story with indepth.  "i see this nightmares in my dreams". This dialogue used is distressing. It connotes to the audience that this man has been scard for life by the tragedy he has had to face. The lighting in the back of the window is very high key. This represents freedom. As he is in a room now sharing the tragedy, behined there is light showing that his dispears are secluded around him, but outside is hope. The editor also blurs out the content behined him, so that the man is the main subject here and the main importance.
